end of the friends only thing [09 Jun 2020|03:18pm]
Hey all.
EDIT: I'm UN-flocking some of my fiction.

Because of the cycle I've got going on with Oil, Water, and Some Other Unmixy Thing (in tags here) coming up by either somebody reccing it or asking about it over in [info]bloodclaim, and the new ability to age-restrict posts, I've un-friends-locked those chapters of OWUT and put an age restriction on them instead.

That said, I still like friends! If you ask to friend me and your age is displayed in your profile as over 18, I will friend you back. (There are still flocked entries that are adults only, in other things I've written.)

we talked mpreg in class! [31 Mar 2008|07:52pm]
We talked about MPREG in class today. Apparently it's not as distant as we thought it was, folks.
Thanks to [info]psychoadept's link, I sent an article on a pregnant female-to-male transsexual to my teacher, who forwarded it to the class.

Then the amazing happened. An anthropology major told us that male primates (yes, including humans) have uterine tissue in the abdomen, above the intestines. Scientists implanted zygotes into this tissue in several primates, and the tissue reacted just like a uterus would. The primates carried the babies to full term, and then underwent c-sections to bring the little ones into the world.
Now, I can't find reference to this study by googling, but I haven't tried very hard, and I have only googled, not looked for scientific articles.
But I did find this.

Here are some interesting quotes from the article: Another British fertility expert, Dr. Simon Fishel, put it bluntly: "There is no reason why a man could not carry a child. The placenta provides the necessary hormonal conditions, so it doesn't have to be inside a woman."

McGee, now director of the Alden March Bioethics Institute in Albany, New York: "The embryo sends signals that change the hormone levels in the body; males are capable of producing almost enough of the required hormones necessary to carry a baby on their own. If they didn't, they'd take some pills—so not an issue."

question for a story [23 Mar 2008|01:44pm]
Dear flist,
Do you think if a man was accused of child molestation (of a 4-year-old), he would be released on bail?
Facts
1) he co-owns a preschool.
2) the parent who accused him is one of his clients.
3) in his past there was a threat of a similar lawsuit, dropped because he promised to leave the state.
4) he is Rodney McKay, so he has a very irritating personality and is rude to the parents. he lives in a conservative town and ridicules their beliefs. it's very possible he pisses off the judge just by existing.

I think they would probably let him go on very expensive bail, (provided he didn't make the judge angry) but have a restraining order so he can't go back to work or near children. What do you guys think?

the trend of parenting in slash fiction [18 Feb 2008|11:46am]
Bear with me, folks. This is sort of a half-baked idea I'm trying to get down.
The slash parents we write about are amazing fathers... )

In an effort to support my wild claims, I'm asking you all to help me out. Will you leave me links to fiction you know of where there are two male parents? I'd specifically love something where they aren't equal parents, or even something where they're *bad* parents, if such a thing exists, but anything that is related to the topic would be very welcomed. Thanks so much!

fic: The Girl Who Lived [26 Jan 2008|03:12pm]
Title: The Girl Who Lived (For lack of one better)
Rating: PG-13
Summary: What if the Boy Who Lived was, in fact, The Girl Who Lived? (I'm positive this has been done before, although I haven't read any.)
Disclaimer: JKR, yadda yadda.
Author’s Note: I do not have the books on my person, so there are some things that might be off, like numbers and descriptions.
This is unfinished. I started writing, and decided I had no actual desire to re-write the entire series as if Harry was a girl. So I started, and then stopped, and then wrote my plans for key changes.

Harriet Potter lived with her aunt and uncle )
The punchline is that the power she has that Voldemort knows not is the ability to give birth. She and somebody (Ron? Malfoy?) have a baby (probably Malfoy because then their families will unite against V since Malfoy can’t deny that it’s a brilliant political move) and Voldemort attacks them. Harriet, protecting her baby like Lily protected her, kills Voldemort in one strike. Yay. The End.

habits [26 Jan 2008|01:58pm]
I always write my SGA stories from John's point of view, in third person. We start with John doing John-things, and then Rodney enters and doesn't introduce himself for a very long conversation, after which he goes away and John goes back to doing John-things.
This is without fail. I guess I just like Rodney's entrance.
But none of these have been finished. Not a one.

I have no idea who I was going to have speak or what they were going to say. But hey, it started with a D and it was dialogue. Yeah. And of course now I'm stuck. Dammit.

CU history major actors [05 Jan 2008|03:11pm]
Joe Flanigan graduated from the school I go to with a major in history. I had no idea! That's kind of cool.

Also, Christopher Meloni (Law and Order: SVU) graduated from the school I go to with a major in history. How's that for an interesting tidbit?

Meloni came last semester to talk to the acting classes and I was so pissed nobody told me. He was talking about the film industry and what it's really like to work there, and that would have been helpful for the tech BFAs, also. Grr. He talked to an Intro to Acting class, and nobody thought to tell the BFAs in theatre design and management.

passive voice and dangling participles, yay! - the bad grammar post [05 Jan 2008|11:02am]
I suddenly have the desire to write an entire fic in which I use dangling participles and passive voice. Here's a sneak peak of my next story, only written in said obnoxious style:

Lieutenant First Class John Sheppard was still high from flying and in his sweaty BDUs when his door was knocked on. With the energy in his step warring with wariness about just who would be at his off-base apartment, John walked to the door, where it was opened by him. Quickly crossing off his mental list, relieved that nobody was dead and that he wasn’t being transferred from CAP (a job that let him fly all day was John’s idea of a good time – no, the best time), John took a moment to take in the sight of a curly-haired young man who was holding a brown cat and scowling at him.
“You aren’t Judy. Or Julie. Whatever her name is,” was said by the stranger.
“No,” was said by an agreeable John.

SPN [30 Dec 2007|09:05pm]
I find it fascinating how the Buffy/Angel fans have recently gravitated to Supernatural. It's not just some people, it's nearly everybody. It seems like everyone's watching and writing or at least using SPN screencap icons.
I think part of it is that supernatural element in both of the shows. I mean, Buffy the teenage blond girl vs. two sexy 20-something brothers doesn't seem to be a logical parallel. But in both shows, the main characters fight evil and have to deal with the grey areas (OMG Amber Bensen as a good vampire? Priceless.) of good v. evil and what it means to be fighting something that law enforcement and the government know nothing about - the question of what it means to be above the law and whether you actually are, and under what circumstances it is okay to be.
I only started watching SPN this season - after catching up on the last two via netflix a few months ago - and it was just because all of you were watching and writing, and I started to feel like I knew the characters just from reading the fic and figured what the hell, I should probably just watch the damn show. And I was hooked after the first episode (Hello, Sarah Shahi, Carmen from The L Word, and Will Tippin's 'assistant' in Alias as the woman in white? I will never forget.) due in large part to the music. I will admit a weakness for 'the best of mullet rock' as Sam puts it.

life rambling [25 Dec 2007|11:40pm]
The snow outside is amazing. I would post a picture but LJ is being really difficult about the picture thing lately.
I had to drive down to Highlands Ranch on Friday (well, not had to but my friend had graduated and I wanted to go to her grad party) and the roads were great - until I hit about exit 200 on I-25. Then the traffic was stop and go. It took me an hour to get to exit 193, which is where I had to get off. That section took longer than the rest of the trip put together. On the bright side though, I called "Gus" from this summer (named after the Disney Cinderella mouse, as my friends and I know too many people with his actual name and needed a distinction) who I had(have) the mad hots for but who lives in California so I haven't actually seen him since he left after helping me and roommate move in. We talked for almost the entire hour I was stuck in traffic and I remembered how much I really like and want him. I may have convinced him to come for a visit, though, which is wonderful.

Am annoyed with roommate constantly and will live alone next year. If I'm willing to take transit to classes in the fall (hopefully will be done by spring but yeah right I'm delusional) I can live solo, away from the rowdy partying college crowd, and pay the same rent as I'm paying now for the pleasure of living a few blocks from the frats (and campus, which is the actual reason I live where I do.) She opened this gigantic bottle of wine last night (which I don't like, as it's a very sweet white zinfandel and I like reds), drank a glass, and then left town for several days to visit family. Not that I personally paid for this wine, as we split the liquor cost for our party, but I'm still annoyed over the time I left for Thanksgiving and came back to discover she'd opened a bottle of my wine (which again was white and not a favorite, but I could have served it or given it as a gift), drank a glass, and then left it in the fridge for a month. (Yes, I took it out two days ago and said "I'm throwing this out.")

On the bright side, I'm done with the busy semester and have the house to myself over the next few days so I'm hoping to get myself caught up with writing. Or, you know, post something I've half-written and then actually finish it.
